It is known that colon cancer (colorectal cancer) is one of the most common malignant diseases in the developed world, including in Croatia. We cannot change genetics, but there are still several ways in which you can significantly reduce the risk to your health. Research shows that habits related to diet, weight and physical activity are strongly associated with the risk of developing the disease, and it should not be forgotten that such healthy habits can also have a beneficial effect on the occurrence of other unrelated diseases.
1. Participate in the early detection program for colon cancer. Screening can detect the disease before the patient notices symptoms. Colon cancer most often occurs in polyps that can be removed before they develop into cancer, and even if cancer has already developed, there is a chance that it will be detected at an earlier stage when treatment is much more successful. In Croatia, since 2008, people aged 50 to 74 have been referred for a fecal occult blood test every two years. Patients with a positive result are further referred for a colonoscopy.
2. Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This diet is associated with a lower risk of developing the disease. Eat less red meat (veal, pork, lamb) and processed meat, which, on the other hand, increase the risk.
3. Exercise regularly. People who live a sedentary lifestyle are at increased risk of developing colon cancer. Increasing your activity level can reduce your risk.
4. Watch your weight. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer. A healthier diet and regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight.
5. Don't smoke. Long-term smokers are more likely to develop and die from colon cancer. Contact us if you need help quitting smoking.
6. Drink alcohol in moderation. The recommended limit is 2 drinks per day for men and 1 for women.
