Smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, and UV radiation remain among the most important and best-established risk factors for cancer. However, in recent years, increasing attention has been paid to so-called “new” or “modern” risks, such as ultra-processed foods, food additives, changes in the gut microbiome, chronic stress, metabolic disorders, and air pollution.

Our oncologist, Dr. Davor Kust, recently appeared on the OTV television program *Minute bijele kute*, hosted by Dr. Petra Meštrić, where they discussed a number of important topics related to oncology, modern cancer treatment, as well as broader perspectives on health, stress, and quality of life.

Many patients experience changes in their thinking that they did not experience before, during or after cancer treatment. They describe them as “foggy brain,” slower processing of information, forgetfulness, or difficulty concentrating. In medicine, this phenomenon is called chemobrain or chemofog—cognitive impairments associated with cancer treatment. Although the name suggests that it is exclusively chemotherapy, we now know that the situation is more complex.

GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) is a rare tumor that arises in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. It most commonly occurs in stomach (approximately 60%), small intestine, less commonly in the esophagus, colon, or rectum. Unlike most tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, GIST does not originate from the mucosa (the inner lining), but from specialized cells located within the wall of the digestive organs.

On March 21, 2026, Daffodil Day was traditionally celebrated in Zagreb. The United States has reached a major milestone in cancer care: Seven out of ten people now survive five years or more after a cancer diagnosis. According to the latest annual report from the American Cancer Society, five-year survival has increased to 70 percent, up from around 50 percent in the 1970s. At first glance, it may seem like a tall figure, but in reality, it represents decades of investment in science, treatment, and early detection.
