Smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, and UV radiation remain among the most important and best-established risk factors for cancer. However, in recent years, increasing attention has been paid to so-called “new” or “modern” risks, such as ultra-processed foods, food additives, changes in the gut microbiome, chronic stress, metabolic disorders, and air pollution. Public discussions sometimes create the impression that we are surrounded by invisible threats and that almost everything can cause cancer. But how much of this is supported by scientific evidence, and how much still remains in a gray area?
